Investigations of Arete Wealth Management and Arete Wealth Brokers

In 2021 a customer of Arete Wealth Management filed a FINRA arbitration alleging that Jeffrey Larson made unsuitable recommendations to invest in alternative investments. In 3/2024 the customer was paid $815,000 to resolve the matter.

In 11/2024 another customer of Arete was paid $65,000 to settle a similar case involving alternative investments.

In 2025 two other cases were filed by customers alleging recommendations by Larson to invest in unsuitable alternative investments. Damages of $800,000 and $226,000 are sought in these pending matters.

SEC Investigation RE: Zona Energy

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed a civil suit and commenced an investigation of Larson seeking to bar him from the securities industry. Allegations include:

  • Larson, along co-defendants Arete Wealth, Joey Dale Miller, Randall Scott Larson, Bob Chung solicited dozens of customers to purchase stock in Zona Energy without receiving approval from Arete
  • Larson and codefendants solicited liability waivers, which they knew contained material misrepresentations and omissions from advisory clients to whom they owed a fiduciary duty
  • To conceal his conduct Larson directed clients not to use his Arete email account
  • Larson and the co-defendants received an anonymous email alleging that the control person of Zona Energy was known by another name and a convicted felon who had served several years in prison for conspiracy to commit securities fraud.

In 10/2023 Jeffrey Larson was discharged by Arete Wealth Management who allege that he was not forthcoming during an internal investigation.
