The Times, www.NWI.com reports that Marcus Schrenker, a native of Merrillville who faked his own death in 2009 in an attempt to avoid state and federal fraud investigations is the subject of a 30 minute film, “$cammed: Investment Fraud Revealed”, produced by Indiana’s Secretary of State, WFYI-TV and the Investor Protection Trust.
The film is set to air on public television and can be seen on NWI.com as well.
Schrenker scammed 76 victims in 10 states out of $4 million and was sentenced to 10 years.
Schrenker made national news in January 2009 by taking off from Anderson, Indiana in his plane to flee state and federal investigators. He made a distress call saying his windshield had burst and he was bleeding, when in fact he had parachuted out of the plane and taken off on a motorcycle he had hidden in a campground.
After flying 200 miles on auto pilot the plane crashed in Milton, Florida. Schrenker was arrested weeks later in Florida. He was released in September 2015 and believed to be living in the Tallahassee area, according to the press.
According to Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson, this type of case is not an isolated incident. Lawson indicates that her office receives about 200 fraud complaints a year and currently has about 60 active investigations.
